AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Kalyaneswar Hanuman Mandir is a small, active Hindu temple in the heart of Khardah, a busy residential suburb in North 24 Parganas just north of Kolkata. Set on PK Bishwas Road in the Deshbandhu Pally and Jelepara neighbourhoods, it is a place of everyday devotion rather than a grand monument: an older shrine to Hanuman, the monkey-god also known as Bajrangbali, that has been renovated into a tidy, attractive temple and now draws devotees from the surrounding lanes each morning and evening.↗↗
There is no ticket, no museum-style display and no fixed sightseeing routine here; the temple's appeal is its living atmosphere. Visitors come to see how a modest neighbourhood shrine anchors the faith of a dense Kolkata-side community, where people pause on their way to work or the market to offer a quick prayer.↗
A temple of the neighbourhood
The temple sits close to the Khardah co-operative bank on PK Bishwas Road, a useful local landmark for finding it amid the maze of para (bazaar-street) lanes that characterise old Khardah. Locals describe it as an older shrine that was renovated and given a fresh, well-kept look, so what you find today is a compact, tidy temple space rather than an ancient ruin or an imposing structure.
