AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Maharshi Valmiki Mandir is a small Hindu temple in Mhaiswadi, a village near Malkapur in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra's Vidarbha region. The temple is dedicated to the sage Valmiki, revered in Hindu tradition as the Adi Kavi — the first poet — and the compiler of the Ramayana.↗↗
While modest in scale, the temple serves as a place of devotion for the local community and reflects the deep cultural reverence for Valmiki that runs through rural Maharashtra. Visitors appreciate its peaceful village setting and its connection to one of India's most foundational literary and spiritual traditions.↗
Who Is Maharshi Valmiki?
Valmiki occupies a singular place in Hindu heritage. According to tradition, he was a reformed forest-dweller who, through penance and divine grace, became the author of the Ramayana — the epic narrative of Lord Rama's exile, battles, and triumphant return. He is called Adi Kavi because his composition is considered the first kāvya (poem) in Sanskrit literature, and his Shloka (verse) form set the standard for all subsequent Indian poetry.↗
