AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Castle Peak Beach (青山灣泳灘) is a gazetted swimming beach along Castle Peak Road in Tuen Mun, New Territories, Hong Kong. Set against a striking backdrop of public housing towers and the hills of the Tuen Mun hinterland, it offers a rare urban-meets-coastal swimming experience with calm, shark-netted waters, one of the district's largest barbecue areas, and a fascinating history of pollution and recovery.↗↗↗
Closed for swimming for 24 years due to poor water quality, the beach finally reopened in 2005 after major dredging and sewage infrastructure projects. Today it serves as a beloved local recreation spot — popular with families who enjoy its combination of sea swimming, barbecue pits, and sweeping views across Castle Peak Bay toward the Tuen Mun Typhoon Shelter.↗↗
A Unique Urban Setting
Unlike Hong Kong's postcard-perfect island coves, Castle Peak Beach wears its city-adjacency proudly. The tall residential towers of Sam Shing Estate rise directly behind the beach, while to the west the calm waters of Castle Peak Bay stretch out toward the Tuen Mun Typhoon Shelter and its breakwater. Mountains frame the scene on the inland side, giving swimmers a layered panorama of skyline, sea, and hill that is found nowhere else among the New Territories' coastal beaches.
