A crossing born in the Middle Ages

The first bridge on this spot is thought to date to around the mid-13th century, the Frankish era, when Karytaina was a fortified seat guarding the route out of Gortynia. Its present form, however, comes from 1441, when it was rebuilt by Raul Manuel Melikis, a scion of a prominent late-Byzantine family. According to tradition, Melikis nearly drowned trying to cross the swollen river on the ruined old crossing; saved at the last moment, he undertook to raise a sturdier bridge in its place. He also added a relieving arch on a pier that seats directly on a rock.↗↗

What makes the design special is its feel for the river. The body of the bridge is not a straight line in plan but curves gently upstream, a hydrodynamic refinement that lets the structure better resist the surge of floodwater—a rare and clever adaptation in late-Byzantine bridge-building. Set into one flank is a small chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin (the Panagia), the guardian saint of the crossing, a custom Byzantine masons observed on many bridges; an inscribed plaque recording the 1441 rebuild was long embedded in its walls.↗↗

The bridge of the 5,000 drachmas

Few monuments in Greece are as familiar from everyday memory as this one. The bridge—12 metres high, some 50 metres long, its largest arch spanning roughly 8.75 metres—was reproduced on the reverse of the old 5,000-drachma note, paired on the front with Theodoros Kolokotronis, the general of the 1821 Revolution who operated from these hills. For that reason locals and visitors alike still call it the "bridge of the five thousand."↗↗↗

Like the famous bridge of Arta, Karytaina's crossing carries a darker folk memory: the legend that, to make the arches hold, a Frankish princess was walled up alive in the foundations, tying the bridge to the castle and its lords. Whether or not the tale ever had a kernel of truth, it has become part of the bridge's spell, alongside a quieter tradition that passers-by dropped coins through a slit in the parapet for the little chapel, the offerings falling behind the icon of the Virgin within.↗↗

A stage of the 1821 Revolution

Because it was among the few crossings linking Gortynia with Messenia and Ilia, the bridge was repeatedly contested—both under Ottoman rule and above all in the war of independence. It was here, on 26 March 1821, that Greek fighters killed a Turkish courier carrying a letter that would have warned the local Turks to abandon Karytaina; the episode is often read as one of the first deliberate acts of provocation at the outbreak of the revolution. Kolokotronis himself referred to blocking the bridge to stop Turkish reinforcements reaching the castle, and the French traveller and diplomat Pouqueville described the river slipping beneath the crossing that led into Karytaina.↗↗↗

Walking down to the water

The bridge lies below the village, and the pleasure is in the descent: a footpath or short dirt track drops from Karytaina to the wooded banks of the Alfeios, where the surviving stone arches, the patched timber section and the looming 1950s concrete span above make a striking little tableau of three eras side by side. The nearby Frankish castle, perched on the rock, and the confluence where the wilder Lousios meets the Alfeios complete the scene. Karytaina also sits at the heart of one of the Peloponnese's most rewarding walking and rafting country, threaded by the award-winning Menalon Trail.↗↗

Nearby river crossings worth combining

For anyone drawn to the old stone arch, the Karytaina area is a small constellation of them. A short drive takes you to the elegant single-arch bridge of Atsicholos on the lower Lousios, an 18th-century work of the Langada masons; to the poised "suspended" bridge of Koukos over an Alfeios gorge; and, farther along, to the rock-hung monasteries and ruined mills of the Lousios Gorge, sometimes called the Holy Mountain of the Peloponnese. Pairing a visit to Karytaina's own bridge with one or two of these makes a satisfying half-day of bridges, water and village life.↗↗↗
