AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Basing Wood is a light, airy ancient woodland on the northern edge of Basingstoke, Hampshire, where broadleaf and conifer trees old and young shelter a surprisingly rich web of wildlife. Managed by Forestry England and open free from dawn to dusk, it offers three easy waymarked walking trails, a natural pond, a forest meadow, picnic benches and a nature play area, making it a favourite local escape for families, dog walkers and anyone wanting to slip into the trees without leaving town.↗↗↗
A secret green gem on Basingstoke's doorstep
Tucked between Chineham and Popley and easily reached off the A33, Basing Wood is one of the largest ancient woodlands in the Basingstoke and Deane area. Despite being a short hop from a busy town, it feels like its own quiet world: a diverse mix of coniferous and hardwood trees through which many paths thread, opening out onto glades and the neighbouring Old Vyne estate fields. Forestry England keeps it a 'light airy wood', cutting back the edges of the tracks to let more daylight in, which restores the vital woodland-edge habitat where flowering plants flourish and the whole food chain follows.↗
