AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Le Phare is Chambéry's flagship indoor arena — a big, modern, do-it-all hall where touring French and international artists play, classical ballet companies set up, stand-up comedians pack the floor, and the city's first-division handball team defends its court. Inaugurated in January 2009 and designed by the architecture firm Patriarche & Co, it holds up to around 6,200 people for a standing concert and nearly 5,800 seated for sport, making it one of the largest live-music and event venues in the Savoie region.↗↗
What makes it worth planning a night around is the range. In a given season the same building hosts a name-act concert, a family-friendly ice or ballet spectacular, a comedy show and a European handball fixture — the place where Chambéry and the surrounding Alps come together to see the same headliners that pass through Lyon or Geneva, only a short train or drive away. The forecourt itself carries emotional weight, named the Esplanade Grégory-Lemarchal in honour of the singer from neighbouring La Motte-Servolex.↗↗
