AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Butterfly Park Empuriabrava is a compact tropical zoo set inside a 2,000 m² greenhouse on the Costa Brava, where a recreated rainforest is home to free-flying butterflies, parrots, toucans, wallabies and a cast of quieter surprises. For roughly ninety unhurried minutes you can wander among animals that roam the paths beside you and watch the whole butterfly life cycle up close.↗↗↗
What lifts it above a typical small menagerie is its dual role as an animal refuge and a conservation classroom: many of its birds arrived as donations that can no longer survive in the wild, and the park's stated aim is to teach visitors about habitat protection and the reality of keeping birds as pets. A warm, shaded walk full of colour, wildlife and gentle education, it is especially well suited to families with young children.↗↗
A rainforest under glass on the Costa Brava
The park recreates a slice of tropical rainforest beneath a single large greenhouse, its exotic plants doing the quiet work of holding the right humidity and a balanced ecology for everything that lives inside. It sits in the Empordà, a corner of Girona province framed by three protected landscapes—the Aiguamolls wetlands to the south, Cap de Creus to the east and the Albera range to the north—so a visit here pairs naturally with the region's wider nature offerings.
