AT A GLANCE
Why go?
WIWA Baggerplatz in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg is the rare kind of attraction that turns a childhood fantasy into an afternoon: you climb into the cab of a real hydraulic excavator and dig, lift and drive it yourself, from nimble mini-machines up to a 22-tonne tracked giant. It is the playful offshoot of WIWA Wilko Wagner GmbH, a demolition and earthworks firm, which is why the equipment here is the genuine article rather than a kiddie ride.↗↗↗
Beginners are not thrown in at the deep end. An experienced machine operator gives a clear, roughly fifteen-minute induction, then stays close by—ready to answer questions or shut the machine down with a remote control if needed—while you work the joysticks alone. Across more than four excavators and thirty-plus tonnes of steel, guests can scoop, move and shift different materials and even drive around the open grounds, so a session feels like real site work rather than a fixed-position demo.↗↗
Reviews consistently praise the relaxed, smiling staff, the surprisingly delicate response of the big machines, and the souvenir photo of you posed with the excavator. With a 4.9 rating from hundreds of visitors, it has become a go-to for birthday gifts, family outings and anyone—man, woman or older child—who ever wanted to be Bob the Builder for real.
