Guangzhou, CN

AT A GLANCE

Why go?

Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street (上下九步行街) is the beating commercial heart of old Xiguan in Guangzhou's Liwan District—and the place that set the template for the whole country: when it opened in September 1995, it was hailed as China's first purpose-built commercial pedestrian street. For more than a millennium this has been where Guangzhou did business, and today a stroll of roughly 1,200 metres under continuous arcade rooflines still delivers the most concentrated dose of street-level Cantonese life in the city.↗↗↗

What makes it compelling is the blend of architecture, food and memory. The covered qilou (arcade) buildings fuse Lingnan and European detailing into a single shaded corridor lined with time-honoured restaurants, century-old bakers and bustling snack stalls, living up to the Cantonese proverb "Eat in Guangzhou, but savor in Xiguan." It is an easy, free and highly walkable introduction to the city—especially rewarding when paired with the restored heritage lanes of nearby Yongqing Fang and Enning Road.↗↗

A thousand years of trade on one street

The name Shangxiajiu refers to two old roads, Shangjiu and Xiajiu, with the lane called Tenth Fu (Shifu) folded in too—an inheritance from the Ming dynasty, when the opening of the Daguan River turned this western edge of the city into a grid of commercial "fu." Trade here is older still: records point to a market settlement from the 6th century and a Song-era lane called Xiuyi as Xiguan's earliest trading quarter.↗

Its real golden age came under the Ming and Qing, when Guangzhou's famous Thirteen Hongs merchant compound made the city the empire's main gateway for foreign trade. Wealthy Hong merchants built grand private gardens and mansions in the area, and teahouses, banking houses and restaurants multiplied. After the Thirteen Hongs were destroyed by fire in 1937, commercial life shifted onto Shangjiu and Xiajiu roads, and the arcades that define the street today were largely raised in the late 1910s and 1930s after the old city walls came down.↗↗

In 1995 the lanes were closed to traffic and reopened as a pedestrian street, and the district keeps reinvesting in itself—recently as the anchor of Guangzhou's "Big Xiguan" evening-economy zone and a designated municipal night-market pilot, so the buzz of stalls and neon carries well past dark.↗↗

The qilou arcade: architecture you can shop under

The signature sight is the continuous row of qilou, or Tong Lau arcade buildings—a Lingnan form that borrowed Western ideas of the covered verandah and married them to Chinese shop-and-dwelling life. The ground floor is set back to form a public walkway sheltered from both blazing subtropical sun and sudden rain, while homes or rooms sit above, with Romanesque columns, balustrades, fretwork and carved facades crowning the storefronts.↗↗↗

It is the longest and best-preserved run of traditional arcade commercial buildings in Guangzhou, and it frames everything else you see: hanging shop-signs, busy crossings and the low, glowing corridors that look most atmospheric at dusk when the lanterns and signage switch on. The street strings together Shangjiu, Xiajiu, Dishifu, Baohua and Wenchang roads into roughly 1,200 metres and well over 300 shops.↗↗

Xiguan on a plate: where to eat

For many visitors the food is the whole point. The street clusters the city's most storied Cantonese kitchens: Taotaoju, founded in 1880 and once a gathering place for Cantonese-opera artists; Lianxianglou, trading since 1889 and credited with popularising lotus-seed-paste pastries; and the elegant banquet-style Guangzhou Restaurant, established in 1935. A long Cantonese breakfast of dim sum at one of these old names is a classic Shangxiajiu experience.↗↗

Between the grand houses, a dense line of specialty snack shops serves the true street-food version of Xiguan: silky double-skin milk and ginger milk curd, rice-noodle rolls (cheung fun), clay-pot congee, wonton noodles, braised beef offal and the crisp fried fish skin that is a beloved beer snack. It is an area best grazed in small portions from stall to stall rather than eaten at in one sitting.↗↗↗

The district is equally famous for its baked goods. Around Mid-Autumn, Cantonese-style mooncakes from the heritage bakeries travel far beyond the street—sold to homesick Guangzhou natives at home and abroad—making the tinned and boxed pastries a popular edible souvenir.↗

Beyond the shops: Xiguan culture nearby

Shangxiajiu works best as a walking base for the wider old Xiguan quarter. The restored heritage enclave of Yongqing Fang and the 800-year-old arcade corridor of Enning Road are a short, pleasant stroll away, pairing conserved lanes and courtyards with craft demonstrations, small museums, cafes and neon-lit evening photo spots. Together they form the most rewarding half-day in Liwan.↗↗

Other Xiguan landmarks reachable from here include the historic Hualin Temple, the carved wooden Xiguan grand houses, the ornately decorated Chen Clan Ancestral Hall folk-art museum, and, to the west, the former foreign-concession island of Shamian with its quiet European-style avenues. Each adds a different facet—religious, residential, artistic, colonial—to the same old trading district.↗↗

Making the most of your visit

As an open public street it has no gate fee and stays lively through the day, with the arcade roofline giving you cover whatever the weather. For the most authentic bustle arrive toward evening, when the food stalls and night-market energy peak; for quieter browsing and photos of the arcades, weekday mornings are calmer.↗↗

The neighbourhood is dense and pedestrian-focused, so come with room in your appetite rather than an itinerary. Wear comfortable shoes for a fair amount of strolling, plan to graze small dishes across several stalls, and keep a camera handy for the arcade facades and glowing signage. Pairing the street with Yongqing Fang or a Shamian sunset makes a satisfying, walkable Xiguan afternoon and evening.↗

Getting there is straightforward by metro—Liwan's Changshou Road and Culture Park stations both feed into the area, dropping you a short walk from the arcade lanes—though the streets fill heavily at weekends and holidays, so mid-week visits are the more comfortable choice.↗
