Blackshale Creek Suspension Bridge Trailhead

AT A GLANCE

Why go?

Deep in Kananaskis Country, just outside Banff National Park, a slender 73-metre rope bridge sways across a steep creek valley—and the fastest way to stand on it is from this modest, unmarked pullout on the Smith-Dorrien Trail. The Blackshale Creek Suspension Bridge Trailhead serves up one of the Canadian Rockies' most fun short hikes: a 10-to-15-minute loop through the forest that ends at a footbridge suspended high above Blackshale Creek, with the peaks of Peter Lougheed Provincial Park framing the view.↗↗↗

What makes this spot so appealing is the contrast between how little effort it takes and how big the payoff feels. The bridge is a genuine piece of trail engineering, built so hikers and bikers can cross the creek directly instead of scrambling down and back up the steep creek bed, and the crossing itself is a little unnerving in the best way. Because the round trip is barely over a kilometre, it suits families with very young children, beginners, and anyone with a spare hour between longer adventures—a rarity in mountain terrain, and a big reason it has become one of Kananaskis' most-loved quick outings.↗

On the High Rockies Trail

The Blackshale Suspension Bridge sits on the High Rockies Trail, an 80-kilometre route that runs from Goat Creek above Canmore down to Elk Pass on the British Columbia border. The bridge was added as a dedicated crossing so that through-hikers and mountain bikers could clear the creek directly rather than detouring around its steep banks. Built with structural design by the engineering firm McElhanney, the span carries people across the valley on cables, with brace lines added to steady it in strong wind. There are no guard rails at the valley edges near the bridge ends, so pause carefully and mind your footing if you stop for photos.↗↗

Because it is a shared-use trail, expect to step aside for mountain bikers coming and going. The bridge is rated for a limited load, so a good rule of thumb is to keep off it when about 20 people are already on the deck. In summer and early fall it gets genuinely busy—there is even a "congested area" sign posted as you approach—so patience and a little courtesy go a long way, especially when a line of photographers forms at each end.↗

Two Ways to Walk to the Bridge

This trailhead marks the short, local route and is the most popular way to reach the bridge. Park at the roadside pullout where a narrow cleft opens up with two dirt paths on either side of it; the crossing forms a loop, so you can take one path up and the other back down. The path is unmarked at the road, so watch your map closely for the turnoff. It is a gentle but steady climb of roughly 10 to 15 minutes to the bridge, an easy out-and-back of about 1.1 km.↗↗↗

If you would rather make a proper hike of it, the official and longer approach starts across the road at the Black Prince Cirque parking lot. From there you climb to meet the High Rockies Trail and walk a rolling, up-and-down forest route of about 6 km return with roughly 330 metres of elevation gain—best in 1.5 to 2 hours—before the bridge appears at the end. That route is well maintained, partly shaded, and a favourite for families and casual hikers who want a bit more exercise.↗↗

Plan Your Visit

The best window for crossing the bridge is late spring through early fall, roughly May to October. Once the snow arrives, Alberta Parks closes the bridge, since the weight of accumulated snow can strain the structure, and a one-kilometre trail bypass lets you route around the span instead. The short loop itself stays walkable for snowshoers even when the bridge is shut, and the Smith-Dorrien Trail periodically closes in winter for avalanche control, so check Peter Lougheed advisories before you set out.↗↗↗

A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required to park anywhere in this area, including the Black Prince lot and the roadside pullouts, costing about $15 per day or $90 for an annual pass with multiple vehicles. Buy it online or at the Kananaskis Visitor Information Centre before you drive in, because cell reception drops out shortly past the centre—download offline maps and a saved route for the turnoff in advance. There is no public transit to the bridge, so plan to drive: it is just over an hour from Canmore and roughly an hour forty from Calgary, along a Smith-Dorrien Highway that alternates between pavement and dusty gravel.↗↗↗

The area is real bear and cougar country, with moose common nearby. Carry accessible bear spray, keep dogs on a leash (as required throughout Kananaskis), make noise on quiet stretches, and check recent trail reports for any wildlife warnings before heading out. The closest washrooms are at the Black Prince parking lot, and the roadside here offers no facilities, so use them before or after your hike.↗↗

Make a Day of It

Because the bridge takes only an hour or two, it pairs easily with another outing. The longer Black Prince route connects to the well-loved 2-hour return hike to Warspite Lake, while the Gypsum Ridge trail starts across the highway and is especially good in winter. Further down the Smith-Dorrien, the bigger days are Burstall Pass (a hard, five-hour-plus climb) and Chester Lake (a moderate three-to-four-hour hike); heading the other way, the shorter, family-friendly Ptarmigan and Arethusa cirques deliver meadow scenery and are spectacular in larch season.↗↗

To stay nearby and give yourself a head start on the crowds, the Kananaskis area offers options from the Kananaskis Wilderness Hostel and Kananaskis Mountain Lodge up to the luxe Mount Engadine Lodge, plus the large, easy-to-book sites at Elkwood Campground only a short drive from the bridge. If you want picnic tables afterward, the Black Prince lot has them, or you can drive a few minutes to the Peninsula Day Use Area for a lake view while you eat.↗↗

Highlights

A genuine 73-metre rope suspension bridge spanning a steep creek valley, the only way across on the High Rockies Trail.↗

One of the Rockies' best big-payoff, low-effort hikes—about a 10-to-15-minute walk to the bridge from this pullout, suitable for toddlers on up.↗↗

Short forest loop you can hike or snowshoe year-round, plus a longer 6-km option from the Black Prince lot for a fuller workout.↗↗

Mountain-peak views over Blackshale Creek and easy pairing with Kananaskis' signature cirque hikes and larch-season walks.↗↗

Practical Tips

Watch for the unmarked roadside pullout on the Smith-Dorrien Trail; the short loop has two dirt paths forming a circuit, so you can go up one and back the other.↗↗

Arrive early or visit late in the day to dodge the midday crowds and photo lines at the bridge, especially on summer weekends.↗↗

Carry the Kananaskis Conservation Pass and download offline maps before leaving home, since cell service is patchy to nonexistent once you drive in.↗↗

Bring bear spray, leash your dog, and step aside for mountain bikers; stay off the bridge when about 20 people are already on it and mind the unguarded valley edges.↗↗

Expect bridge closure in winter under heavy snow; use the bypass loop or save the crossing for the May-to-October season.↗
