AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Lake Tengrela is a small, shallow lake in southwestern Burkina Faso's Cascades region, just 7–8 km from the town of Banfora. It is the country's most celebrated wildlife spot, home to a colony of hippopotamuses that local villagers consider sacred and that visitors can observe up close on a traditional canoe guided by village fishermen.↗↗↗
Beyond the hippos, the lake offers sunset views over water lilies, abundant birdlife, and an immersion in rural West African life — a landscape of palm groves and sugar cane fields far lusher than the savannah many imagine when they think of Burkina Faso.↗↗
Sacred Hippos and the Canoe Experience
The main reason travelers make the short hop from Banfora is the colony of hippopotamuses that inhabit the lake. For generations, the people of Tengréla village have lived alongside these animals under what they describe as an ancestral pact — a belief that the hippos are sacred and will not harm the community. Today, village fishermen take visitors out on wooden canoes (pirogues) to the spots where the hippos rest, gliding silently through water lilies until ears, eyes, and broad backs break the surface.
