AT A GLANCE
Why go?
In the heart of Innsbruck's old town, the Stadtarchiv/Stadtmuseum (City Archive & City Museum) tells the story of the city through rotating exhibitions that draw on an unusually rich source base. Archive and museum form a single municipal department, so the displays pull directly from the documented record of Innsbruck's development—paintings, photographs, maps and everyday artifacts—making each show an authentic, well-researched look at how the city grew and lived.↗↗↗
This is not a fixed permanent collection but a programme of thoughtfully curated exhibitions. One season may survey the city's housing history from barracks to empty flats, another may unfold the post-war life of Innsbruck through a photographer's archive of over 25,000 negatives, while a forthcoming show opens up the world's largest holding of drawings from the Tyrolean Baroque. A visit rewards anyone curious about the layers beneath the tourist façade of the old town.↗↗
Located at Badgasse 2, the museum sits right among Innsbruck's celebrated sights and combines easily with a ticket for the Golden Roof and the City Tower. Admission is modest, the visit is short and rewarding, and the building is reached by elevator for step-free access.
