AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tucked behind an arch on Pushkin Street, a two-minute walk from Republic Square, Art Kvartal is Yerevan's most atmospheric contemporary-art hideaway: a cluster of studios, galleries, boutiques and a café gathered inside a 19th-century courtyard complex. It began informally as a artists' squat and opened its doors to the public in April 2022, so the place still feels lived-in rather than museum-stiff — painters work in plain sight, and visitors are welcome to watch, chat and even leave a mark on the walls.↗↗↗↗
What makes the quarter special is its layering. Contemporary 21st-century art sits comfortably within century-old interiors that once housed the laboratories of the Tairov wine-and-brandy factory and the home of Hovannes Kajaznuni, prime minister of the First Republic of Armenia. Today the same rooms host a picture gallery, creative labs, vintage shops and an art café, and anyone can drop in, meet the resident artists, admire their work, buy an original piece or simply settle into the courtyard with a coffee and a dessert.
