Mount Wanda Trailhead
Mount Wanda Trailhead is the gateway to 326 acres of oak-studded hills above Martinez, California, where naturalist John Muir once wandered with his daughters Wanda and Helen. This National Park Service–managed landscape offers a satisfying climb through golden grasslands and live oak woodland, rewarding hikers with sweeping views of the Carquinez Strait, Mount Diablo, and the surrounding East Bay hills. Though modest in elevation—Mount Wanda is not really a mountain but a set of rolling hills—the trail delivers a genuine workout with an initial incline averaging 13 percent grade over roughly a mile. At the top, a network of paths branches in multiple directions, and the entire round-trip takes between one and two and a half hours depending on pace and route choices.
