Shun'an Fude Shrine (Houli Earth God Temple)
Tucked down a quiet residential lane off Sanfeng Road in Houli, Shun'an Fude Shrine is one of Taiwan's most familiar sacred sights in miniature: a neighbourhood Earth God temple (福德祠) where local residents have long stopped to light incense, give thanks and ask for smooth days ahead. Though modest in size, it functions as a real village faith centre for the Houli area rather than a roadside curiosity. The shrine's main deity is Fude Zhengshen, the 'Righteous God of Virtue and Prosperity' better known as Tudigong (土地公, the Earth God). Registered as a Taoist temple, he is the most approachable figure in Chinese folk religion and the most widely worshipped — the guardian of land, harvest, household and honest livelihood. For visitors, the appeal is exactly this: an intimate, unpretentious glimpse of everyday Taiwanese belief, open around the clock.
