Fort Leça de Palmeira
Perched on the urban shoreline of Leça da Palmeira, right at the mouth of the Leça river and facing one of the entrances to the Port of Leixões, the Fort of Nossa Senhora das Neves is the dramatic star-shaped castle that locals still call the 'Castelo de Matosinhos'. Built in the 17th century to guard this stretch of coast from pirates and privateers, its angled granite bastions and projecting sentry boxes make it one of the most photogenic historic landmarks on the Porto waterfront. Today the fort no longer fires a single cannon: it serves as the headquarters of the Port of Leixões Captaincy and the maritime police. Visitors mostly admire it from the marina-side promenade rather than touring the interior, but its setting, sea-facing walls and the lively 'Pirates of Leça' re-enactment held nearby in summer give it a real sense of place for anyone exploring the Matosinhos coast.
