Mahamuni Pagoda
The Mahamuni Pagoda is Myanmar's most revered pilgrimage destination in Mandalay and one of the country's holiest Buddhist sites. At its heart stands the Mahamuni Buddha image — a 3.8-metre-tall bronze figure so ancient and so venerated that millions of devotees have layered its body with nearly 15 centimetres of gold leaf over centuries, transforming its once-sharp features into a soft, golden mound. According to legend, the Buddha himself visited the ancient kingdom of Arakan and breathed life into this image, making it a living representation of the Enlightened One. In 1784, the Burmese army carried it off as spoils of war and reassembled it at this site south of Mandalay. Today, every morning at dawn, the monk in charge washes the statue's face — the only part still visible beneath its golden casing — drawing crowds of pilgrims and visitors who come to witness this intimate daily ritual.
