Ishifune Kannon
Ishifune Kannon is a small hillside temple in Okaya, Nagano, perched along the old Nakasendō highway at the foot of Shiojiri Pass. Its name — "Stone Boat Kannon" — comes from the main deity, a Horse-Head Kannon (Bato Kannon) enshrined on a boat-shaped stone pedestal. For centuries this has been a guardian shrine for travelers crossing the pass, and it remains especially venerated by people seeking relief from leg and back ailments. Visitors approach up a long, dramatic stone staircase from the old highway, passing a carved wooden dragon beside a clear spring stream before reaching the compact shrine buildings at the top. Halfway up the steps, Lake Suwa stretches out below — the same view that once offered encouragement to weary travelers about to climb the mountain road ahead.
