Yamada Hydrangea Road
Yamada Hydrangea Road (あじさいロード山田) is a free, self-guided flower walk on the hills above Niihama, Ehime, where roughly 7,000 to 8,000 hydrangeas bloom in a ribbon of pink, blue, purple and white along a narrow country lane and a shaded footpath. What began three decades ago as a single neighbour's gift of ten plants is now a beloved seasonal ritual, tended by the local community and enriched by its own quirky tradition—handmade scarecrows that take on new characters every year. It is an easygoing, low-key outing rather than a grand attraction: visitors come to wander, photograph the blossoms and the sometimes uncannily lifelike scarecrows, and enjoy views over Niihama and the Seto Inland Sea. The best window is June, though the same slopes carry cherry blossom in spring and maple colour in autumn.
