Kasugataisha Shrine
Kasuga Taisha is Nara's most revered Shinto shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose vermilion columns blaze against the deep green of a primeval forest that has been left untouched for over a thousand years. Established in 768 as the guardian shrine of the powerful Fujiwara clan, it is famous across Japan for its thousands of stone and bronze lanterns, its sacred deer, and the elegant Kasuga-zukuri architectural style that takes its name from these very halls. A visit to Kasuga Taisha is a walk through living history and layered spirituality. The forest approach lined with weathered stone lanterns, the striking contrast of vermillion lacquer against white walls and cypress-bark roofs, and the gentle presence of free-roaming deer create an atmosphere unlike any other shrine in Japan. Whether you come in early May for cascading wisteria, in February for the magical Mantōrō lantern festival, or on a quiet weekday morning when fog softens the ancient woods, Kasuga Taisha rewards travelers willing to linger.
