Kotooka Ridgeline Observation Deck

The Kotooka Ridgeline Observation Deck (琴丘稜線 展望台) sits on a low forested ridge above Mitane, in western Akita, and earns its place in a day's itinerary on the view alone: from the clearing at the top you look out over the impossibly flat, grid-lined plains of the Ogata polder, the broad shimmer of Lake Hachiro, and the dark wall of the Shirakami mountains on the horizon. It is an easy, free and quietly rewarding stop. There is no admission gate and no fixed opening time—the deck is reachable around the clock—and the short walk up to it is wrapped into a certified health-walking course, so a quick lookout and a real woodland hike are both on offer in the same spot.
