Gyoki-ga-hana Point

On a low, wooded ridge where Himeji's Matogata coast reaches out into the Seto Inland Sea, the headland known as Gyoki-ga-hana Point (行基ヶ鼻 / 行基が鼻) is one of Hyogo's quiet historical landmarks. Local tradition holds that Gyoki (668–749), the great Nara-period monk credited with pioneering public works and spreading Buddhism across western Japan, came ashore right here. The mountain thrusts itself all the way to the water's edge, and its very tip is now ringed by a breakwater, so legend and working coast sit side by side. It is a small, atmospheric place rather than a polished sight: sculpted Cretaceous rocks, scattered quarry boulders, a thin strip of sandy beach, and short hills that open onto sea views. It makes an appealing stopping point on a stroll around Matogata, a former port and salt-making town packed with shrines, an old Gyoki-founded temple, the scenic 'Little Red Cliffs' coast, and some of Kansai's best shallow clam-digging beaches.

Ninomaru (Second Bailey) Site

Tucked between Himeji Castle's open third bailey and the soaring white keep stands the Ninomaru, the castle's second bailey—the heavily fortified middle zone that every visitor walks through on the way to the main tower. Far from being a quiet courtyard, it is where Himeji reveals its true genius as a machine of war: a tangle of turning lanes, masked gates, dry moats and earthen walls designed to swallow an attacking force whole and hold it in killing ground. Himeji Castle itself is Japan's most celebrated fortress, the largest and best-preserved of the country's handful of original castles, and one of the first Japanese sites inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage property in 1993. Nicked the "White Heron Castle" for its brilliant plastered walls and upturned roofs, its complex of more than eighty buildings has survived fire, war and earthquake for nearly 400 years. The Ninomaru is the layered heart of that defensive ensemble. For a first-time visitor the second bailey is the best place to understand that Himeji is not a single pretty tower but a complete, interlocking castle town in miniature. Allow two to three hours for the full route through the gates and up into the keep, and the Ninomaru's carefully engineered chaos will stay with you long after the postcard view fades.
