Ihatov Volcano Center

The Ihatov Volcano Center is a free, government-run visitor facility dedicated to Mt. Iwate (岩手山), one of Japan's most prominent stratovolcanoes. Named after Kenji Miyazawa's beloved literary utopia "Ihatov" — his poetic vision of Iwate's landscape — this compact center brings together live volcano monitoring, educational displays, and information about the geothermal energy that powers the surrounding Hachimantai highlands. Located in the Matsuo area of Hachimantai City, it is a natural stop for hikers heading toward Mt. Iwate, families exploring the region's volcanic landscapes, or any traveler curious about how Japan manages the risks and harnesses the energy of an active volcano.
