Sri Sri Mahabhairab Temple (Mahabhairav)
On a low hill in northern Tezpur stands one of eastern India's most venerated Shiva temples, built around a massive stone lingam that tradition calls a living, self-manifested rock. The Mahabhairab Temple layers myth, archaeology, and living devotion into a single hilltop shrine that defines the spiritual heart of this Assamese town. Legend credits the demon king Banasura with founding the temple in devotion to Shiva; archaeologists date the first stone structure to the 8th–10th century under the Mlechchha dynasty. The 1897 great Assam earthquake toppled the building, and a Naga ascetic rebuilt it in concrete in the early twentieth century — the tall spire visitors see today. The sacred lingam, however, has remained in uninterrupted worship through every rebuilding.
