Compton Bay and Down
Compton Bay and Downs is a National Trust nature reserve on the Isle of Wight's dramatic west coast, where fossil-rich cliffs give way to one of the island's best sandy beaches. Here you can hunt for 120-million-year-old dinosaur footprints, surf Atlantic swell, or walk breezy chalk downland that has remained essentially unchanged since the end of the Ice Age. The beach draws families, surfers, and fossil hunters in equal measure, while the open downs above offer a network of footpaths crossing to the Tennyson Trail on the ridge top. Three car parks make it easy to choose your starting point, whether you're after waves, walks, or prehistoric treasure.
