Colonne de la Déesse
The Colonne de la Déesse — the Goddess Column — is Lille's most beloved civic monument, standing proudly at the center of the Grand'Place to honor the city's defiant resistance during the 1792 siege by the Austrian army. A fluted granite column topped by a dramatic bronze statue of a warrior woman, the monument has served as Lille's symbolic heart since its inauguration on 8 October 1845. What makes this monument unforgettable is not just its imposing 15.5-meter silhouette but the story it tells: the citizens of Lille refused to surrender to an invading army, and the goddess at the column's peak immortalizes that courage with a cannon-fuse in one hand and the other pointing to the mayor's defiant words carved into the stone below.
