Airlie Beach is the mainland gateway to the Whitsunday Islands, a lively coastal town built around a sheltered swimming lagoon and an esplanade lined with cafés. With 32 hotels ranging from guesthouses to resort apartments, it works equally well for backpackers and for travelers wanting a laid-back base for reef and island trips.

The most pleasant months are September to November, with warm days, low humidity, and only 6 to 11 rain days. January and February are the rainiest stretch, with around 20 rain days each, and the heat peaks in January. For clear skies and calm weather, aim for August to October; the dry season runs from June to September, making those months ideal for beach and reef trips. Summer brings humidity and heavier showers, so the shoulder months of May and November offer a good balance.
Stay in Airlie Beach proper, on or near The Esplanade, for easy beach access and the main strip's cafes and shops. Shute Harbour Road is central, close to tour departures, and suits first-timers. If you prefer a quieter stay with water views, the hillside above town is calm and still walkable to everything. Whitsunday on The Beach and Airlie Beach Hotel sit right by the water, while Sea Star Apartments Whitsundays is up the hill for a serene base. Choose Airlie Beach itself, not outlying areas, to be near the lagoon and marina.
Cedar Creek Falls is a natural swimming spot with cascades in a rainforest setting. The Whitsunday Islands National Park protects the region's iconic island scenery and reefs. Boathaven Beach offers a calm, family-friendly stretch of sand close to town. For the islands themselves, Viper Whitsunday, Island Connections, and Wings Sailing Charters run trips that get you out on the water, often to Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet.
Day trips from Airlie Beach go to Whitehaven Beach and the Whitsunday Islands, with highlights like the Hill Inlet lookout and snorkelling. The Great Barrier Reef is also a full-day destination from here. These tours typically combine sailing or rafting with reef or beach time. Each of these is a full day out, and you can pick based on whether you want more sailing or more reef.
Plan 3 to 4 days. Use the first day for the Whitsunday Islands National Park, including Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, plus a snorkel trip. Spend another day on a Great Barrier Reef full-day adventure. Add a half day for Boathaven Beach and Cedar Creek Falls. If you want a separate day trip, add one more day.
